Carn Ghluasaid
Sgurr nan Conbhairean
Sail Chaorainn
Map
Solo - Trisha stayed in the chalet at Invermoriston. Nice day, cloudy but clear of the
tops - the sun broke through in the afternoon and it got quite hot then.
Shirt and T-shirt were enough all the way to the top.
I left the car by Loch Cluanie and set off at 9.25. The first thing you come across
then is the memorial to John Dudley Sandeman, 'lost in the hills above this point' on 3rd Jan
1960, at the age of 19 years and 6 months. The only son of the late PK Sandeman and
Mrs Sandeman, poor lass. A cheerful start.
Going up Carn Ghluasaid I saw some deer looking down at me about half a mile further
up the hill - nowhere to be seen by the time I got there, of course, although there were plenty
of tracks. I took 1 hour and 35 mins to get to the top of Carn Ghluasaid, as opposed to 2
hours and 10 mins according to the book. I then got to the top of Sgurr nan Conbhairean in 2 hrs 30
mins (3 hrs 20 mins) and Sail Chaorainn in 3 hrs 30 mins (3hrs 50 mins). From there I
carried on along the ridge to cop the next top, only 10 minutes away, because there
was a cairn there.
Up to this point I hadn't seen a single person on the hills - totally alone -
but I passed about 7 on the way back. There had been no navigation difficulties,
a good path leading all the way up. On the way down, via Drochaid an Tuill Easaich, the path
eventually disppeared, however, and I ended up yomping through the bog and bracken as traditional.
The trip took 6 hrs and 5 mins, including 20 mins for the extension bit. All straightforward,
nothing difficult.
