21st May 2002

Sgurr Breac
A' Chailleach

Map

Another nice day, dry with sun & cloud and the tops all clear so it was back to the very same parking spot I'd been at two days earlier, this time to do the two westerly mountains.

I left the car at 9.45 and followed the same route up the Allt Breabaig all the way to the 'platform' mentioned above (11.45). I then struck off right along a reasonable path up the steepish slope of Sgurr Breac and reached the summit - grassy and round with some rocks - at 13.05.

At the top of Sgurr Breac looking down the way I had to go, I saw a school party just reaching Tomain Coineach from the Druim Reidh - they set off towards me and I set off towards them (13.20). We said hello as we passed each other - the kids were about 14, maybe 9 of them with 3 teachers. From Sgurr Breac I followed the path west, across a Top called Tomain Coineach, and on up to the summit of A' Chailleach . A very straightforward ascent, short grass, good path, some rock, & fine views. A few old fence posts were dotted along the way. By the time I got to the top of A' Chailleach (2.25) the school party had reached Sgurr Breac and got back to Tomain Coineach again. We set off towards each other again & passed a second time at the low bit between TC and AC but I skirted a bit wide this way up. By the time I got back to TC they were still only halfway up AC. I didn't see them again.

Leaving A' Chailleach at 2.40 I retraced my steps back to the top of Tomain Coineach (3.15) and turned left there along its northern spur, Druim Reidh. This was a long, pleasant, grassy amble of about a mile which ended with a steep descent down a step-like path formed by walkers' footprints. Back at the car 17.05 again!
