Attempt at Sgurr nan Gillean
Map
Overcast & spots of rain when I got up at 8.00 and the midges were already frolicking
around the campsite. I had breakfast at the Slig Hotel and, determined not to spend
another night in Midge Grotto, I got the tent down and then set off to have a bash
at Sgurr nan Gillean.
It was a longish walk in and I missed the bit where the SnG path forks off to the left (it's about
300 paces past meeting the main stream (not the first wee stream) by a 12 foot waterfall
where 2 planks take you across. Anyway I missed it and carried on till I got to the
Basteir Gorge - unmistakeable. Realising my mistake now I decided to carry on and do Am Basteir
instead.
I followed the path but it was wending its way up the right side of the gorge whereas the book had said
to follow the left hand side. Nevertheless I continued, ascending a steep, slabby stone bit with
water running off it, and donning my rainproofs now because it kept raining - the tops were
completely invisible. After a while I began to feel uneasy about the rain and cloud,
bearing in mind that the final ascent is supposed to be a narrow, exposed, tricky scramble, and in
the end I turned round - the weather could well improve but I wasn't in the mood to sit
there for hours waiting.
Once back in civilisation I posted a couple of InPin postcards and returned Ron's fleece shirt
he'd left in the car - he gave me a cup of tea. Then I drove back to Spean Bridge to the
same B&B I'd stayed in on the way up - RoseBank.
