Day 11
Wednesday 30th May 2012
Clove Lodge to Middleton-in-Teesdale
Cooler still today and some cloud cover but it stayed dry for the eleventh day
in a row so I had been very lucky so far.
Setting out from Clove Lodge |
A straightforward day for I only had an undemanding 6 ˝ mile stroll to get to
Middleton-in-Teesdale. Rolling, grassy sheep country with not much ascent to contend
with. A few areas had cows in them but I had no problems - a couple of bullocks
looked slightly bullish but happily they kept their distance.

Walking through a buttercup meadow |
I got to Middleton by about
12.00 and as this was a bit early to check in to the Belvedere I went for a cup
of tea and a cake at the 1618 Café. What a dump, crates of crap inside and it
took ages to get served despite going and asking. I was ready to leave and go
somewhere else when the waitress turned up. No cakes available despite them
being on the menu. Alright, a toasted teacake then. Eventually I had to go and
ask what had happened to my order - 'it's coming'. Then the tea arrived followed
by a further ten minute wait before the teacake turned up. Absolutely useless.
Dropping down from Harter Fell towards Middleton |
Middleton-in-Teesdale |
I bought a paper and sent a couple of postcards then checked in. In the evening
two out of three pubs struggled to offer a vegetarian choice of bar meal. I ended
up in the Teesdale where they did a veggy balti just for me - quite nice really.
