Day 16

Monday 4th June 2012

Kellah Farm to Twice Brewed

Quite bright today, sunny intervals, cool in the early morning but warmish later. A good breakfast at Kellah Farm. Four girls in their late 20s were also staying there and had been hobbling about and whingeing the night before because they had walked along a stretch of Hadrian's Wall with all its ups and downs - it's really not so bad. They were friendly enough though, especially the generous chested one with the broad mouth, short dark hair and slightly quirky face. And the blonde with the slightly protruberant eyes… just kidding myself, eh!

After breakfast I left at 8.50 and made good progress over the trackless wastes of Blenkinsopp Common, getting to Thirwell Castle by 10.40 in time to meet Les and Carol Fitton who were joining me for the walk along Hadrian's Wall. I'd had to walk through a field of cows on the way and as usual felt nervous doing so. I always unship my walking pole on these occasions and find it helps to have a potential weapon in hand, irrespective of how much use it might actually be.

I met Carol and Les and we walked along the course of the Wall for six miles to Twice Brewed. On the way my phone rang and to my surprise it was Lesley, the owner of last night's B&B at Kellah. I'd left with the room keys in my pocket! Oops! Never mind, Carol and Les kindly agreed to drop them off for me after the walk.

This was a very nice stretch with great views either side of the Wall which follows the heights of a great fault line in the land along prominent escarpments and cliffs - a natural line of defence against the Scottish barbarians.

At the end of today's section we dropped down from the ridge to the Twice Brewed Inn where I had a room booked for the night at a rather bracing £73! Not much choice around there though and I suppose they have to make the money while they can to tide them over the lean winter months. The three of us had a couple of pints and a bite to eat - veggy burger and chips for me - and then Carol and Les bade me farewell and set off with the Kellah keys while I checked in and set about the usual nightly chores of washing bits and charging the electrical stuff.
