Cycling Along the Loire
Sunday 28th August 2016
Chinon to Angers
There was some cloud cover first thing in the morning and it was a lot cooler
today – about mid 20s as opposed to 36°, so it was easier riding along. A hot
air balloon was drifting along above our hotel when I looked out of the window
of our room.

Breakfast was OK at Chinon, par for the course. We set off at 9.28 and made good
time on the smooth, level tracks along the Vienne and were soon at Candes St
Martin, an attractive town at the confluence of the Loire and Vienne rivers.
Just next to Candes was Montsreau where a street market was in progress. Very
lively and we stopped for a coffee and a look around there. Further along we
reached Saumur where there was another market and I got a veggy-burger from a
snack bar – despite the name it was actually a bun with vegetables in, with no
attempt to make them into any kind of burger shape. Still, it was OK and kept me
going for a while.

We were aiming for St Mathurin sur Loire but when we got
there there was no accommodation and the Tourist Information office said there
would be nowhere doing food on a Sunday so we decided to just carry on and head
for Angers instead.
Time for a paddle |
Not too difficult but there was an awkward stretch on the
D952 where the wind was quite strong and the traffic fast and plentiful before
we found the velo track. After that it was all fairly straightforward. We
entered Angers, a fairly large town, and found accommodation for the night at
the Hotel de l’Europe (€80 for the room plus €10 each for breakfast).

J'attends mon veggy burger |
That evening we ate at the ‘Cantine du BDC’ which did a very nice, unsoggy
veggy-burger and frites along with a nice Hoegarden white beer. Later we took in
another bar, tried the ‘Blonde des Caves’ (beer) and had the odd game of crib or
two.
