Cycling Down the Rhine

Wesel to Arnhem

The iron-bound door did its job well and we survived the night at the Adams Family residence. No breakfast was provided and we'd run out of dates and apricots so we had to set off from Wesel on empty stomachs.

We crossed back over the Rhine then rode along good cycle-ways to Xanten, the only German town beginning with X, so Andrew tells me.

Xanten was only 16 km away and proved to be a very pleasant market town with a pedestrian shopping street and a cobbled town square sporting a few national flags including the Union Flag. We sat down at a street cafe on the square and had a 'Fitness Fruhstuck' each - muesli, yoghurt, fruit juice, cheese and egg and a roll, bread and jam and a coffee. Seemed a bit more filling than the dates and apricot.

We rode west, following the Rhine, and got the ferry across it at Millingen; then it was just a straightforward ride to Arnhem. In the evening we had a very nice Indonesian meal, a kind of thali thing, then a couple of pints in the town centre bars. It's a lively town with plenty of bars but unfortunately they all seem fond of the same moronic, boom-boom noise which passes for music these days. Oh, for the good old days of 'insane in the membrane', I say, and I'm sure we all agree with that.

Anyway, we're near to the end now, on 777 miles, so I've rescheduled the ferry for Friday and am looking forward to hugging my loved ones on my return.

55 miles today making the total 776.97 miles.
