Cycling Down the Rhine
Sunday 27th August 2017
Lorrach to Breisach
This morning we got ready, took a taxi back to the scene of my accident then
waited for Achim to turn up and restore our bikes to us - Achim being the nice
German chap who'd called the ambulance and kindly stored our bikes in his office.
Achim was busy though so his partner, Saskia, came instead, accompanied by some
affable but anonymous chap, probably her brother. Saskia too was very nice and
helpful, enquiring about my wounds and asking if there was anything more they
could do for us. What nice people - once again my thanks go to them.
The morning after
|
Anyway it was 10.30 by the time we were ready to go. I was a bit nervous, not
knowing if I'd be able to ride. I'd slept on and off the previous night and was
more or less ok but my arm felt as good as broken - even though I knew it wasn't
- and I couldn't put any strength through it. This made mounting the bike
awkward and some control manoeuvres were difficult.
Still I couldn't wimp out without giving it a try. We decided to attempt a short
leg to Neuenburg, just 27 km, and off we set. It was uncomfortable, awkward and
a bit painful at times but things settled down after a while and we got to
Neuenburg with plenty of time to spare.
Easy riding

The ride had been made easier by being
all traffic-free and virtually level, no hills just a barely discernible
downward slant to match the river. It was a bit monotonous but just right for my
diminished biking ability.
So from Neuenburg we decided to carry on a further 20 miles to Breisach, and you
know what, we got there.
