Cycling Down the Rhine
Tuesday 22nd August 2017
Chur to Oberriet
Ah dear, am knackered. Only 47.7 miles today and a lot of that was on a very
gently descending gradient - more or less level really - but I've got a cold,
my nose is dripping, throat sore and that torrid Swiss sun was baking the juices
out of me. Ah well, I expect it'll all be ok soon enough.
Leaving Chur |
Actually it was a lovely sunny day today; we left Chur about 9.35 and bowled
along a fairly level cycleway for a while then there was a bit of uphill stuff
near Malans. We stopped and had a cup of tea and a cake in the pretty village of
Jenins then descended through vineyards back
to the Rhine and got onto a nice easy traffic-free cycleway on top of the levee.

We crossed over to Liechtenstein via an old wooden covered bridge and got a bit
of lunch and a present for Eric in Vaduz. After that we continued past Buchs and
then started looking for somewhere to stay. Unfortunately that was not as easy
as we thought and we had to keep riding on and on, with me getting a tad weary
by now.

We ended up in the last hotel on the way out of Oberriet, the Hotel Rhy. It took
ages to check in through their automated high-tech system without an English-speaking
receptionist to help. Part of the process asked for nationality. Simple enough,
you'd think, but no. British Indian Ocean Overseas Territory was ok, as was
Isle of Man, but British, UK, English....? On your bike.
Anyway eventually an anglophone human being was found who sorted things out for
us. Even so it was a pricey stay here at 160 Swiss francs. That includes no
adapters for Swiss electrical sockets - even the Ibis Budget hotel could provide
those when asked.
Not to worry, eh. Friedrichshafen tomorrow - we've booked in advance this time.
