Cycling Down the Rhine
Wednesday 23rd August 2017
Oberriet to Friedrichshafen
We each had a rosti to eat last night, at a bar further into town than the Hotel
Rhy. Rosti is a local thing - basically it's grated potato and onion usually
with cheese and a fried egg. It's ok but gets a bit samey towards the end. I
was still feeling seedy because of my cold too but slept ok.
Today we got away about 9.30 and made our way back to the river. It was another
hot, sunny day and in the morning we rode along the levees again then at Bregenz
opted to take the route along the northern shore of Lake Constance rather than
the slightly shorter but reputedly not as nice southern route.
Lake Constance |
We were now in Austria but you could hardly tell that apart from the fact that
the currency had changed. No border formalities here, nor a bit further on when
we passed through into Germany.
Tired of shelling out large amounts for lunch, today we had cheese rolls rescued
from the Hotel Rhy's breakfast bar and some crisps, hummus and tiramisu cake
from a Bregenz supermarket. About 7 euros for the two of us instead of 44.
Lunch in the park at Lindau |
Lindau |
We ate all that at Lindau, a pleasant town with cobbled medieval streets, sited
on a small island in Der Bodensee, as the locals call Lake Constance.
We passed a free Fire Engine museum where Andrew insisted on trying on the fireman's helmet. |
Me too |
As the day wore on it got hotter and hotter and became a real slog by around 15:30. Still
we bashed on and finally arrived at Friedrichshafen. There we located the bijou
hotel Andrew had sorted out for us - handily sited midway between a tattoo
parlour and a sex shop. There was no-one there to let us in (into the hotel,
not the other two) but fortunately a female German guest turned up, rang the
manager and got us in.
Due to my technical skill with the bike computer today's mileage actually
came out as kilometreage - it was 65. Sounds better than 41 miles, eh.
